GILMER—The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting death ofa 17-year-old man who was found dead in his vehicle in the Diana community late Sunday, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Jacob Johnson, of Diana, who withdrew from New Diana School in October, according to a school spokeswoman. No arrests had been made as of late Monday, Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said.

The man died under suspicious circumstances, but not from suicide, said Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Lyle Potter, who ordered an autopsy. The sheriff’s office issued a news release saying the “case is being investigated as a homicide.”

The vehicle was parked alongside Sego Lily Road in eastern Upshur County, Potter said, who said he did not know the circumstances under which the body was discovered.

He said he the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 a.m. Monday. The body was found sometime before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said deputies “responded to a suspicious vehicle call” in the Diana area, and that upon arrival, “they found a male subject dead from a gunshot wound.” The news release stated the investigation was ongoing and the office would issue an update “as more information becomes available.”

Byrd said he could not discuss details of the case because it’s an “ongoing investigation.”
