A Smith County man is behind bars on Tuesday after an incident where shotgun fire struck three people during an altercation following a night of drinking around a bonfire.
Smith County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Moore said Jerry Gene Allen, 56, was taken into custody Monday about 10 p.m. after the shooting in the Enchanted Lakes subdivision in the northwest section of the county.
“Reports indicate that (people) had been drinking at a bonfire gathering in the neighborhood when he got into an altercation with several individuals. (A man) left the location and then went into his home and retrieved a shotgun. He then fired the shotgun, hitting a man and two women, causing non-life threatening injuries,” he said.
Moore said EMS responded and treated those who were hit. Two of the victims were taken to a Tyler area hospital.
Allen was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He remained jailed Tuesday on bonds totaling $150,000.
