A Smith County Sheriff's Office jailer has resigned following his arrest on charges he struck his wife with a gun then fired a shot during the incident.

Sheriff Larry Smith said his deputies responded to Maggie Circle in Flint at Sgt. Reginald Clark’s home Tuesday and determined that Clark had used a weapon to hit his wife and then discharged his weapon during the incident.

It is not believed the weapon was directed at anyone when it was fired.

Smith said Clark was receiving no special treatment because of his status with the department.

“We have raised the bar and expectations of a higher standard for our law enforcement officers, and that bar will not be lowered under any circumstances,” he said.

Clark posted a $100,000 bond and was released from jail Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.

Clark worked in law enforcement before being hired by the Smith County Sheriff's Office as a jailer on May 30, 2004. He resigned on Sept. 23, 2005, and was rehired as a jailer on July 10, 2007.
