Jarvis marks founders week

Jarvis Christian College will celebrate its 102nd birthday with its Annual Founders Observance this week.

Featured events include the Founders Convocation at 10 a.m. today in the Smith-Howard Chapel with Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. as the featured speaker, according to a news release from the college.

Chavis, the former executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1993 through 1994, currently serves as president of education for the Online Services Corporation, the world’s leading provider of online higher education for Historically Black Colleges and Universities across America.

A career day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Anthony Robinson Varsity Gymnasium.

On Thursday, the J.N. Ervin Lecture Series will be held at the Smith-Howard Chapel at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. William E. Crowder Jr., pastor of Park Manor Christian Church in Chicago is the speaker. At 6 p.m., an evening with Mr. and Miss Jarvis will be held at in the Mirror Room in the Rand Center, followed by the UNCF Gospel Extravaganza at 7 p.m. in the chapel, the release states.

Jarvis will hold a high school day in the Rand Center Varsity Gymnasium from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. A Greek step show will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by a concert featuring rhythm and blues singer Sammie.

The Second-Annual President’s 5K Walk/Run for Scholarships will start at 8 a.m., and afterward, the annual Blue and Gold Banquet/Dance will be held at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview.

Founders Week will conclude with the Founders Worship Service Sunday at 11 a.m. in the chapel, followed by brunch in the Ida V. Jarvis Student Center.
