Family and friends are rallying around Aaron Jenkins, a 20-year-old Mabank man with liver cancer.
“The problem is Aaron is not insured. The family has signed up for the Affordable Care Act, but the insurance policy will not go into effect until April 1,” his aunt Sheila Guill said.
After battling what Jenkins thought was the flu, he saw a doctor who sent him to UT Health Northeast in Tyler where a mass in his liver was discovered.
Jenkins’ best hope is to get admitted into M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Guill said.
Christian Area Ministry Outreach will present a benefit for Jenkins, “I Ride for Aaron,” on March 22 at Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena in Mabank. Entry fees will be a donation. Donations also can be made to: Aaron Jenkins Benefit Fund, First State Bank Mabank, 201 S. 3rd Street, Mabank, 75147.
Guill said Jenkins has applied for Supplemental Security Income but has been denied twice.
Congressman Jeb Hensarling has been asked to step in on behalf of Jenkins to obtain SSI. “We have indicated to the right departments the emergency nature of the case,” said Sarah Rozier, communication director for Hensarling.
