A man charged with killing his wife and another man reportedly has attempted suicide in the Van Zandt County Jail.

Sheriff Lindsey Ray said Larry Maples was transported to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler after he was found hanging in his cell early Thursday.

Ray said the inmate used a bed sheet and was found during a routine check.

“Jail staff immediately summoned help and removed the sheet from around the inmate’s neck and began first aid. Once first responders and ambulance personnel arrived, the inmate was transported to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler for further treatment,” he said.

Maples has been in custody awaiting trial on capital murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child and attempted murder charges.
