Two men were arrested for an attempted ATM theft on Thursday.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office was called to Kelly Federal Credit Union on Texas Highway 31 West at 2:41 a.m., after someone saw two men using a cutting torch on an outdoor ATM machine, according to a news release from the office.
Steven Prior, 35, was found hiding behind a nearby business and was arrested, but the second man was not found after a two-hour search.
The search was called off, and deputies interviewed Prior.
Winston Barnes, 25, was arrested at a home in the 500 Block of Ferguson Street in Lindale just before 5 p.m.
Both men were charged with the third-degree felony of unlawful use of a criminal instrument, a second-degree felony of theft of property — less than $200,000 (for the ATM) and a class A misdemeanor of evading arrest. Each has bonds totaling $251,000.
The department said the arrests might lead to solving several other burglary cases.
“I want to praise the citizen who called in this attempted ATM theft,” Sheriff Larry Smith said. “This individual saw something and immediately called it in, and then stayed on the line with us to tell us what they were seeing, which was instrumental in us catching the first individual and I’m sure will help us find the second individual. I am grateful for Smith County citizens like this person who are willing to assist law enforcement in keeping everyone safe.”
Tyler and Lindale Police Department helped with the investigation.
