(MCT) -- A Palestine woman in a highway checking on her injured dog was struck by a car and killed.

Cheri Lynn Hope, 46, died from injuries she suffered Monday afternoon at the intersection of highways U.S. 287 and Texas 19 South, about a half mile from the Palestine city limits, according to Texas Department of Public Safety

“Apparently, her dog had got hit by a vehicle. She was out there crouched over either in an attempt to pick it up or protect it when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound,” DPS Trooper Jack Hallock said. “According to witnesses at the scene, she was partially in the travel lane.”

She was struck by a 2001 Ford Expedition driven by a 61-year-old Palestine man.

“We had several 911 calls of a lady in the roadway with a dog just prior to the crash and law enforcement was responding,” Hallock said. “I was actually on my way to that call when the crash occurred."

The accident is still under investigation, Hallock said.
