Gregg County Sheriff's Lt. Kirk Haddix says an investigation is going on at Gregg County Jail where five inmates have been treated after smoking synthetic marijuana.
County Health Authority Dr. Lynn Browne sent the five inmates to a local hospital Friday, where four of them were treated and released, Haddix says. A fifth inmate was hospitalized overnight and returned to the jail Saturday. No one was seriously injured.
Investigators are trying to determine how the synthetic marijuana was smuggled into the jail and are talking with as many as 30 inmates, Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said.
Cerliano adds that about a cigarette's worth of the substance was brought into the jail by a man arrested mid-day Friday by Longview police. Neither the police officer nor jail staff found the substance during searches. Once the suspect was inside the jail, he shared it with other inmates.
The suspect’s name has not been released.
