Anderson County: 2nd Chuckwagon Races to be held Saturday

The second year of Texas history fun will start this year at the 1836 Chuckwagon Races in Anderson County.

The event, which begins Saturday, will be held at Diamond B Ranch in Neches.

Moon Swanson, organizer of the event and co-owner of the ranch, said the races are a celebration of Texas history and when Texans declared independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836.

“We are going to focus in on that a lot,” he said. “It’s a celebration of Texas independence day and promoting Texas history.”

All of the events are family and equine friendly and folks can sit on their horses while watching events.

The weeklong celebration includes music, trail rides, wagon races, food vendors and various demonstrations on colt starting, Dutch oven cooking, sheep herding, equine soccer and more.

The gates are open to camping a week before the race, and people are encouraged to bring their horses, mules and wagons and participate in the activities on the schedule.

The weekend features chuckwagon races with teams of horses.

Lawn chairs are suggested, as seating is limited.

Admission is $20 a day for people 13 and older, $10 a day for ages 5 to 13 and free to children under five.
