The president of a local nonprofit has filed to run for the District 4 position on the Tyler ISD school board.

Kevin East, 40, president of The Boys & Girls Clubs of East Texas, said he heard there was a need for someone to run in this district and wants to serve the community in this capacity.

Current District 4 trustee Shirley Jordan said earlier this month she will not seek re-election to the board.

Prior to his current job, East worked for 15 years as Pine Cove Christian Camps’ executive director of ministries. He also worked briefly with the Family Matters organization based in Scottsdale, Ariz.

East said he speaks about marriage and parenting issues at conferences.

Additionally, East said he believes his calling is to raise up Godly people in our cities and to care for kids throughout the community.

Regarding the school board, East said TISD has a great superintendent and board. He said his strengths include being a progressive thinker and innovator.

Eastman said he also possesses energy, conviction and passion.

“I like to challenge the status quo and to push things over the top,” he said.

East said he met with TISD Superintendent Gary Mooring and board Vice President Andy Bergfeld to discuss serving as a trustee. He said he thinks the time commitment is manageable, and his wife supports his decision to run.

The Flint resident is married to Stephanie, a stay-at-home mother, and they have five children who range in age from 8 to 3. Their oldest two children attend Jack Elementary School.
