The Tyler ISD board of trustees is seeking the community’s input in the naming of two new facilities scheduled to open in fall 2015.
The facilities are a new middle school near Three Lakes Parkway in south Tyler and a Career and Technical Education Center under construction at the corner of Earl Campbell Parkway and Bennett Drive, according to a TISD news release.
Per board policy, a facility may be named after a person who has served the district or community; a local, state or national heroic figure; or any local state or national geographical area.
“A person whose name is considered must have made a significant contribution to society and/or education, and the name should lend prestige and status to an institution of learning,” according to the board policy.
The school board must approve the naming of all facilities.
The board also has received a recommendation to consider renaming Dixie Elementary School and is seeking community feedback about the matter before moving forward with the request.
To provide input, community members should email TISD Communications Director Dawn Parnell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The email should include: the facility for which the name is intended; the suggested formal name of the facility; and the rationale behind choosing the suggested name, according to the news release.
The school board will consider all feedback before making final decisions this spring, according to the news release.
