A Tyler man accused in a February 2013 shooting death at Broadway Square Mall is scheduled to have his next court appearance later this month, according to the Smith County 7th Judicial District Court.
Assistant Court Coordinator Toni White said Ricky Neal Jr. appeared in court this morning, and the case was continued. His next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 24.
Ms. White said Neal did not have legal representation as of this morning, but the court could appoint counsel for him, or he could hire someone in the future.
Neal is accused of shooting and killing 23-year-old Chris Mass at the mall on Feb. 9, 2013. A tweet that police said Neal sent to another man's girlfriend sparked an altercation that preceded the shooting.
Neal is charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
