TURNERTOWN — An autopsy shows that a man found dead in his pickup earlier this week was a homicide victim.

Rusk County Sheriff Sgt. David Roberts said the autopsy indicated the 64-year-old man died of a gunshot wound.

“We did delay the information about it being a homicide from coming out earlier, because we were waiting on a search warrant to be able to go into the vehicle and make sure there was not a gun in the vehicle,” he said. “We did not want to call it a homicide and then have it ruled a suicide.”

Roberts said a $2,000 reward was being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Alfonzia Garland, 64, of Henderson, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the autopsy was ordered by Rusk County Justice of the Peace Precinct  4, Darlene Childress.

Garland’s body was found in the vehicle on County Road 4107 near Highway 64.

Roberts said the Texas Rangers are assisting in the case.
