LONGVIEW (AP) - An East Texas man who was the caregiver for his parents has been sentenced to nine years in prison for abducting his father.

A Gregg County jury on Wednesday sentenced 51-year-old William Emmett Lawson of Kilgore. Defense attorney J. Brandt Thorson told jurors that Lawson was suffering from stress as a caretaker.

William Lawson on Monday pleaded guilty to aggravated kidnapping in last May's incident involving 76-year-old Robert Lawson.

A criminal complaint says William Lawson told authorities he was trying to kill his father and himself. Officers removed both men from a pickup truck. The son allegedly threatened to blow up the vehicle by igniting some propane.

Debra Lawson Wheeless testified she often called her father and at times heard her grandfather summoning him by ringing a bell.
