Two Tyler ISD elementary school principals received a vote of confidence on Monday.

The school board approved Kim Cole as Orr Elementary School principal and Theodore Timms as Stewart Middle School principal.

Ms. Cole and Timms have been the interim principals at their respective campuses since the start of this school year. Both said the decisions motivated and inspired them.

“It’s hard to put (into) words,” said Timms, who previously worked as a campus administrator at John Tyler High School. “They trust our leadership.”

Ms. Cole had been assistant principal at Orr before moving up to the principal position.

The board also approved the resignation of Marty Barbieri, director of guidance and counseling.

TISD Superintendent Gary Mooring praised Ms. Barbieri’s work in the district and said it will be hard to replace her. But, he said, they want the best for her and her family.

TISD spokeswoman Dawn Parnell previously said Ms. Barbieri, who had been with TISD for two years, accepted a position as Rockwall ISD’s director of guidance and counseling.

In addition to the personnel decisions, the board approved improvement plans related to its special education and bilingual/English as a second language programs.

The Texas Education Agency flagged those two district programs because of certain data that fell outside state-prescribed boundaries.

This included the overrepresentation of African-American students in special education and the poor performance of English-as-a-second-language students as a whole on standardized tests.

The board also approved improvement plans for Douglas, Griffin, Orr and Peete elementary schools and the Wayne D. Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs. These plans are necessary because the campuses received the Improvement Required rating from the state.

The board heard reports about all of the improvement plans during last month’s meeting.

Finally, Dr. Karen Raney presented a report about the Texas Academic Performance Report. It includes a variety of information about student performance, school and district staff, and student demographics.

Mooring said all of the information included in the report has been released before, but it’s compiled to make it easier for the public to read.

The report can be accessed on the Tyler ISD website by clicking on the About Tyler ISD tab, followed by Education Reports, and Texas Academic Performance Report.
