Valeria Barnhill’s art is a bit different. Her style hovers between abstract and whimsical. She uses bright colors and strong lines. She describes it as being cartoonish.

A native of Russia, Mrs. Barnhill said her unusual pieces reflect the happiness she feels inside. Her art and her tale of coming to the United States to pursue a dream of being an artist is one of the stories in the new edition of IN Magazine.

IN, a general-interest magazine covering everything from arts and culture to exercise and outdoor living, is free and available at restaurants and specialty shops throughout the region.

“We’re about East Texans who do amazing things and have fascinating stories,” Editor Danny Mogle said. “Once you see one of Valeria’s pieces, you will never forget it. She shares how her art reflects the life she knew in Russia.”

IN also tells the story of Martha Berry, a woman who connects to her native-American heritage by helping revive the nearly lost art of Cherokee beading.

Also in this edition: Learn why country singer Aaron Watson puts family, faith and fans first; why East Texas is one of best places on earth for bird-watching; and where to go in Dallas for a quick and fun trip with the kids.

IN is online at Patrons also can take out a subscription for home delivery with a subscription card found in the magazine.
