69 children involved: 2 Athens ISD school buses collide; no serious injuries

Sixty-nine Henderson County children were taken to the hospital Wednesday after an accident involving two school buses.

Rebecca Berkley, public information officer with East Texas Medical Center, said EMS took nine Athens ISD elementary children to the Athens facility, 2000 South Palestine St. Sixty more were taken by bus to the facility to be checked over by medical personnel. 

Ms. Berkley said the children’s ages ranged from 5 to 10, and none had life-threatening injuries. Injuries included bumps, bruises and some fractures.

All of the students were treated and released from the hospital Wednesday evening.

The collision occurred between buses 13 and 14, according to the district’s Facebook page.

Parents came to pick up their children at the emergency room, she said.
