Two Walmart associates were taken to a Longview hospital after a man attacked them with a hatchet inside the Marshall Walmart on Sunday.
Police were called to the store at 5:50 a.m. when Christopher Hamilton, a 27-year-old transient from Arkansas, began swinging a hatchet at people, according to a news release from the Marshal Police Department.
Two employees were injured in the attack and taken to Good Shepard Medical Center, according to police.
Walmart spokeswoman Betsy Hardin said a customer stepped in to get Hamilton to stop. The customer received minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital, she said
“Considering the circumstances, it could have gone very bad, very quickly,” she said.
After the attack, Hamilton fled to a wooded area near the store, according to the release.
Marshall and Hallsville police departments searched the woods with the help of the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Hamilton was arrested about 7:30 a.m.
He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.
