Winter weather doesn't deter bellringer

With arctic air and potentially nasty winter weather closing in, Andre “Exalt” Thompson continues ringing away today outside the Walgreens at Rieck Road and Broadway Avenue, determined to own a record.

Thompson started ringing the bell at 11 a.m. Tuesday and hit the 48-hour mark at 11 a.m. today.

He vowed to set a bell-ringing record of 81 hours, even if his two remaining competitors around the country drop out.

As for the wintery weather on its way?

“I’ll deal with it when it gets here,” he said.

Donations have poured in as visitors have stopped to wish him well. Some have brought him coffee. One passerby brought him a heater.

Thompson hopes to not only break the record of hours rung, but also exceed the amount of money raised last year, which was more than $4,000.
