Two East Texas families rang in the New Year with new bundles of joy.
The Galaz family, of Lindale, was the first to welcome their new addition, Gavin Reed Galaz at East Texas Medical Center and the Hernandez family, of Mineola, welcomed Alex Hernandez at Mother Frances Hospital later in the afternoon.
At 6:33 a.m., Chantel and Ruben Galaz, of Lindale, welcomed Gavin Reed Galaz into the world. Gavin weighed in at 8 pounds and was 21 inches long.
He is the first baby for the couple who have been married for a little over a year.
Chantel Galaz, 24, said they weren’t expecting to have the first Tyler baby in 2014.
“He wasn’t due for another two days …” Mrs. Galaz said. “We didn’t have our hospital bag or anything, so we had to improvise.”
The newborn was not named after any family members, but because of phonetics.
We liked the ring of Gavin Galaz, the two G’s together,” Mrs. Galaz said.
The new family was itching to get out of the hospital and start their life as a family.
“I can’t explain it — seeing your son,” Ruben Galaz, 26, said. “It’s a good feeling. I’m ready to get him home.”
There are no set plans for a second addition.
“Maybe in a couple of years — maybe when he’s 2 or 10 — you never know,” Mrs. Galaz said.
Jazmin and Alejandro Hernandez, of Mineola, were also surprised by the arrival of their son Alex Hernandez.
Mrs. Hernandez, 25, said they expected to see their baby on Dec. 31 when they came into the hospital at 8:30 p.m., but Alex was born a little more than a week early at 1:14 p.m. the following day. He weighed in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 19 and 3/4 inches long.
Alex is the third child for the couple, who have been married for seven years, but he is the first boy. He has two sisters, 4 and 6.
The family was hoping for a baby boy.
“I’m so excited,” Alejandro Hernandez, 29, said. “God blessed me with this little boy.”
Alex was named after his father, and resembles his 4-year-old sister Alexia, his parents said.
