JON PERRY, Special to the Tyler Paper

Summer is in the air at the Tyler Museum of Art as the diverse talents of three contemporary Texas artists converge on a seasonal theme in the new exhibition “Making A Splash.”

The exhibit runs through Sept. 17 at the museum, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Admission is free.

Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Making A Splash” showcases the drawings and paintings of Shannon Cannings, of Lubbock, the photographs of Leigh Merrill, of Dallas, and mixed media collages of Kelly O’Connor, of San Antonio, in a group exhibition including close to 40 works of art.

“While highlighting the talent of each individual artist in their respective media, the selected works in this exhibition provide a visual celebration of summertime,” Bell said. “From Disneyland and other familiar destinations to water guns and swimming pools, the images evoke a range of themes including nostalgia and Americana.”

Special events in connection with the exhibition include Summer Lecture Series programs showcasing each of the featured artists

The lectures at the museum are:

-- 2:30 p.m. June 4: Cannings

-- 2 p.m. July 16: O’Connor

-- 2:30 p.m., Aug, 19: Merrill

Additional events include First Friday Tours at 11 a.m. July 7, Aug. 4 and Sept. 1; and Family Days from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, June 10, July 8, Aug. 12 and Sept. 9. Admission to all special events is free, but reservations are encouraged by calling 903-595-1001.
