Is It Just Me? Be good to yourself this year

It seems almost certain the really disciplined people are already 12 days into their resolutions.

For the rest, we have to gauge the right moment. Every other commercial on TV must be for Weight Watchers or Nutrisystem.

Lighten Up East Texas kicked off its new program yesterday.

It’s a good time to get started on anything new now.

One certainty is my friend Art’s sage advice that you can’t outrun your mouth. No matter how much time you spend in the gym you can out-eat any exercise you do.

The two best things I have seen in a personal fitness journey are the observation that it takes a net reduction of 3,500 calories in one week to lose one pound. It is a simple but profound analogy.

There are a lot of Apps and programs out there that help you manage your food/calorie intake. Again, for me the one which seems to be the most practical and easy to use is the Weight Watchers program.

In the past two years, my journey has involved a weight loss of 55 to 60 pounds. My goal for this year is to get down another 15 pounds by the time I turn 50 this June. It will be harder to lose that 15 than it was to lose the last 60.

As the New Year really gets off and running, it always feels good to me to take a little inventory and see what could represent improvement during the next 11.5 months.

Unfortunately for me I tend to be too hard on myself and need people who love me to remind me of the same encouragements I offer others but withhold from myself.

It’s really all about being good to yourself. Getting more sleep. Eating nutritious foods. Being more productive. Finding new capacity to do the things you love the most.

As your year is progressing I hope you find some moments to be good to yourself, set realistic goals and take satisfaction in any progress you make.

Celebrate the victories with the people you love and keep your focus on moving forward.

This past week it was my pleasure to be the speaker at the Emerald Bay Ladies Club. In addition to being a door prize winner and the recipient of some lovely hospitality, I saw some new and old friends and many good customers of this newspaper. I also got to have dinner with my grandparents, which is a bonus any day of my life.
