This is an old family recipe from my grandmother who grew up in Wisconsin. It works best with sausages or brats, rather than hot dogs. I like to get the in-house sausages from FRESH by Brookshire’s that are available at the meat counter.
They make an assortment of sausages and brats that are all delicious.
Grammy’s Drunken Dogs
1 package bratwurst or Italian Sausages
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup whiskey
1/4 cup catsup
1/2 cup water
Combine sugar, whiskey, catsup and water in a 2-cup measuring cup and stir to combine. Place brats or sausages in a saucepan. Pour over the liquid. Gently simmer for 20 minutes. Heat a grill to high and grill the sausages just until they have grill marks on both sides. Baste while on the grill with some of the remaining liquid. Serve with buns and your favorite toppings.
