Tickets are now available for the 7th Annual Celebrity Chef Celebration benefiting the Tyler Woman’s Building Endowment Fund. The event will feature Celebrity Chef Stephan Pyles, a pioneer in New American and Southwestern cuisine.
A fifth generation Texan, Pyles has created 19 restaurants in five cities over the past 29 years, including Routh Street Cafe, Baby Routh, Star Canyon, Stephan Pyles, Samar and Stampede 66. He has authored four highly successful cookbooks and hosted two seasons of the Emmy-award winning PBS series New Tastes from Texas.
He was the first person in the Southwest to win a James Beard Award for Best Chef and was the first Texan inducted into Who’s Who of Food and Wine in America. In 1998, Pyles sold his existing restaurants to Carlson Restaurants Worldwide and took time off to travel the world and research cuisine.
In the fall of 2009, he opened Samar by Stephan Pyles in the Arts District which serves International Small Plates inspired from his travels to India, Spain and the eastern Mediterranean.
The restaurant was awarded Best New Restaurant by The Dallas Morning News and was a James Beard Foundation’s nominee for Best New Restaurant in America. Recently closed for renovation, Pyles will be creating a new restaurant with a “modern Latin” flair called San Salvaje in the same Arts District Space.
In November 2012, Chef Pyles returned to his roots when he opened Stampede-66. A very contemporary version of his family’s Phillips 66 Truck Stop Cafe in West Texas serving modern Texas cuisine.
The restaurant highlights a taco and margarita bar and features Texas classic dishes as well as recipes reinterpreted with modern cooking techniques.
During his visit to Tyler on March 15, Pyles will be teaching a cooking class and preparing the food for a cocktail reception and multi-course seated dinner that benefits the Woman’s Building.
The cooking class will be held at the Woman’s Building at 2 p.m. Recipe booklets will be provided, along with food samples and wine pairings. The seated dinner will begin with the cocktail reception at 7 p.m.
Invitations to the Celebrity Chef Celebration are available by contacting Sweet Gourmet in The French Quarter or The Kitchen Drawer on Old Jacksonville Highway in the Swan’s Shopping Center. Or by calling event coordinator, Cathy Ship at 903-520-2142. The cooking class costs $75 to attend and the dinner is $100.
The Tyler Woman’s building was erected in 1932. Since then it has become the anchor for some of the most picturesque views and gardens in Tyler, and continues to serve as a beautiful landmark, open to the public, for special events.
Conceived by members of the Tyler Woman’s Forum and constructed through the generosity of local citizens, it has hosted hundreds of special events of all kinds. Entertainers, speakers, governors and presidents have passed its threshold, not to mention memories the walls hold with special events, receptions and weddings.
