Fresh 15: Time for runners to start upping their mileage

Race day is inching closer, so it’s time to start building your mileage, especially if you are planning on running the FRESH By Brookshire’s 15K race on March 1.

This week, you want to concentrate on getting up to 4 or 5 miles. Pace yourself, and don’t start too quickly. When you accomplish a long run, it’s good to be able to maintain a conversation with a friend without being out of breath. At this point, you are just trying to build your endurance.

If you have to stop and walk — that’s fine — everyone struggles with getting past the first few miles, and even seasoned runners have the hardest time at the beginning. Think positive thoughts and keep your mind set on the goal you have for finishing the race.

If you are running the 5K, try running a couple of miles at a time without stopping. Stretching and strength training also can help. Websites such as contain tons of valuable information about core exercises to help build endurance and help you stay injury free.

Among other things, we are excited to announce our event’s race director Bill Burke, owner of Premier Event Management. Bill has more than 20 years of experience organizing races, and currently is the race director for some major U.S. road races and triathlons. Premier Event Management is based in New Orleans, and also has an office in Des Moines, Iowa. Some of their events include:

Bay to Breakers 12K Road Race — San Francisco

Hy-Vee Road Race — Des Moines, Iowa

Hy-Vee Triathlon — Des Moines, Iowa

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon — San Francisco

We are very excited to have Bill join our FRESH 15 team, and even more excited to provide a first-class race to our community.

Stay tuned to our Facebook page at for exciting announcements next week regarding a prize purse and entertainment.

Remember, no matter how slow you go, you’re lapping everyone on the couch. Think positive and sign up for the FRESH 15 today if you haven’t already.

Until next time, keep running.
