Doctors: Annual pelvic exams may not be necessary in healthy women. A panel appointed by the American College of Physicians developed a new guideline, which is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which states that pelvic exams may not be needed in healthy women with a low risk of gynecological cancers. They found that there was little benefit, but brought discomfort and distress. They note, however, the Pap smear and other tests were still recommended for all women.
