A blood donor not only saves lives of adult members of their own community, but they can potentially save many more babies’ lives.
Allen Samuels East Texas Dodge is hosting a blood drive with Carter BloodCare from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. April 16 at 3120 SSW Loop 323 on the Carter BloodCare bus in the parking lot. All donors will receive a free oil change. For more information or to make an appointment, call Nicholas Moy at 903-330-0052.
In April, Carter BloodCare is joining with March of Dimes to get the word out about saving premature babies’ lives through blood donation.
Carter BloodCare officials say the need for blood is ongoing and growing. Every day in the U.S., about 41,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident/trauma victims. In 2013, Carter BloodCare delivered more than 440,000 blood components for transfusion.
In April, Carter BloodCare seeks donors for the tiniest patients that a single blood donation can affect. For these patients, often weighing as little as 1 pound, blood transfusions are essential to their survival.
Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.
It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood.
