Winter Dreams: Women's Symphony League Annual Ball set for Feb. 28

Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony, “Winter’s Dreams,” is the inspiration of Women Symphony League’s annual ball set for Feb. 28 at Harvey Convention Center. The work by Russian composer Tchaikovsky debuted in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the winter of 1867.

Ball Chairmen Beth Whitney and Kristen Seeber say the gala will evoke picturesque images of a Russian winter deep in Siberia. Guests will enter a ballroom filled with romantic lighting and a visual fantasy canopy amid a wintry forest. Emerald City Band will provide the music.

“The committee is hard at work to provide a wonderful celebration of the accomplishments of the Junior Symphony League senior class,” Mrs. Whitney said. “Throughout our planning, we are ever mindful of the importance of this annual fundraiser for the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.”

The ball will include a drawing for a chance to win a $7,500 shopping spree at Susan Robinson Jewelry. Silent auction items include an opportunity to conduct the ETSO and to stay at a home in Breckenridge, Colo. Patrons can purchase Treasure Boxes, one of which holds a $5,000 suite of Konstantino jewelry donated by Ramsey Fritz Jewels.

The gala will be catered by Rick’s on the Square and include casino-style games, an Ice Lounge for “chilling,” a Candy Bar featuring treats from Sweet Gourmet and a Coffee Bar by Latte Da Gourmet Coffee. For information about tickets, call 903-596-9154.

Guests will include ETSO Conductor Richard Lee, board members of East Texas Symphony Orchestra, and Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras’ Award of Excellence recipients for outstanding support of orchestras: D.M. Edwards, Southside Bank and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hartley.

HISTORY

Women’s Symphony League was established in 1955 by Lillie Belle Etter, Imogene Fair, Cris Selman, Zoe Talbert and Gertrude Windsor. It has raised millions to support ETSO and music education.

“Each year, more than 550 members organize and participate in fundraising events that raise much-needed funds to support the East Texas Symphony Orchestra and music education for our community,” Cindy Kidwell, WSL president, said. “We are fortunate to have a professional orchestra that is an integral part of the cultural fabric of our community.”

WSL is an underwriter for ETSO’s subscription series and education concert for fourth- and fifth-graders, supports Tyler Youth Orchestra and provides music scholarships. It has helped fund Link Up, programming developed by Carnegie Hall, that allows students to explore an orchestral repertoire through hands-on music curriculum.

JUNIOR SYMPHONY LEAGUE

As a part of WSL, is Junior Symphony League, a two-year service program for high school juniors and seniors. JSL members serve as ushers at ETSO concerts, greet and assist patrons, participate in meetings on learning about music and orchestras and participate in fundraising to support music education.

Sixty-five graduating JSL seniors will be presented during the ball. An asterisk indicates recipients of the Windsor Distinguished Service Award, given to those who accumulate volunteer hours beyond requirements.

Donna Johnson and Lisa White, past and present WSL vice presidents of JSL, along with JSL Senior Coordinators Neysa Roberts and Catherine Harrison, guided the volunteers through the program.
