4-year-old boy 'real blessing' to forever family

Rachel and Charlie Kennerly have been sweethearts since junior high school. They’ve now been married 18 years. They looked forward to the day they would begin a family, but how they be-came parents was not what they were expecting.

“Biological children weren’t really an option for us,” Rachel said. “I had mentioned adoption to Charlie a couple of times and he wasn’t really interested in it.”

But over the next two years, Charlie began watching CBS 19’s Children are a Gift reports, which air every Tuesday night at 10 and Wednesday on CBS 19 This Morning.

Rachel said, “Watching Children are a Gift kind of helped loosen him up and soften him toward the idea of adoption.”

“I wondered if we could do it and just knowing there is a need made me think,” Charlie said.

With a change of heart, this East Texas couple became foster parents and eventually adopted a little boy named Skylar.

“Skylar has been a real blessing to me. I’m all there for him all the way,” Charlie said, proudly watching his son play.

This little boy has brought a lot of joy to a couple who waited a long time to share their love with a child.

“It’s very weird to say we have a child because we didn’t for so long,” Rachel said, fighting back tears. “It’s pretty awesome to be a mom. Pretty incredible.”

Skylar, now 4 years old, has changed a lot since coming into this family.

“He listens when he’s called,” Charlie said. “That was the big thing at first. You could call and call and call he never would look back.”

Rachel added, “He’s come a long way. I mean everybody who sees him, they can’t believe how calm he is.”

But Rachel is quick to add that he still has a lot of energy. “We went from zero to 5,000 mph when we got him because he’s very busy,” she said.

“We really enjoy having him,” Charlie said.

Skylar wasn’t used to one-on-one attention.

“Just being able to do things with him, and teach him things and watch him grow and learn is great,” Charlie said.

And the love in this family has blossomed.

“I love you,” Skylar said, looking at his mom and dad.

“He’s my son,” Rachel said. “He’s my heart. I didn’t birth him, but I love him just as much as if I had. I can’t imagine my life without him. I can’t imagine him being in someone else’s life.”

As they push their son on the swing, the sounds of a child’s laughter echo throughout their yard.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better story with him,” Charlie said. “He’s awesome!”
