The Smith County Medical Society Alliance will hold its biannual book sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 2004 Broussard St.

The first book fair was held in 1968. Since then, more than $450,000 has been given locally for scholarships, all funded by the book fair sales, according to the news release from the organization.

Proceeds from the sale of books fund health-related scholarships at Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Tyler and alliance community medical projects.

Medical projects funded include health fairs, alcohol awareness programs, a special needs students sensory party at Discovery Science Place and its Sisters group that makes, for example, quilts for newborns, bibs for a local day care, kits for the Crisis Center and stockings for the special needs students.

“The community is invited to come and shop the many sections of bargain books,” Marsha Harrison, volunteer and past president, said in the news release. “The Alliance has been a positive force for health career education in Smith County for more than seven decades.”

The book fair recently moved into a new building that is five times the size of their former building, Margie Phillips, president, said.

“The new building offers a more comfortable shopping experience for customers by providing spacious aisles, good lighting and a larger check-out area,” according to the news release. “Our supportive community has been donating books throughout the summer and our sections are filled to capacity.”

Larger sections include fiction, history, religion and biography. A larger indoor space has allowed the children’s section and rare and collectibles to be located in separate rooms.

In the new building, the gymnasium holds books that in the old building were kept outside at a lower price.

The paperback “outside books” sell for 25 cents and hardback books for 50 cents. Inside books range from 75 cents to collector’s prices.

To get to the book fair, turn on Capital Drive across from Brookshire’s Wildlife Center, turn right on DC Drive and left on Broussard Street. You also can turn on DC Drive off of Loop 323 across from Goodwill Super Center and then right onto Broussard Street.
