Habitat for Humanity of Smith County is about to celebrate an important milestone: its 100th home construction.

The home is scheduled to be built at 1702 N. Spring Ave., in Tyler during the first three weeks of November.

To mark the milestone Habitat is conducting an ambitious 100 for 100 Campaign. The idea is to find 100 sponsors for the 100th home, which will be built in only 100 hours.

In a news release to the paper, the Tyler-based nonprofit noted that traditionally Habitat homes are sponsored by one or more businesses, churches or organizations. This will be different. For the 100th home, the agency is seeking 100 sponsors. This provides an opportunity for many people to become involved — perhaps people who have never been involved in this ongoing effort.

“The people of Smith County have supported our work for nearly 25 years, so we want the 100th home to be a communitywide event,” said Jack Wilson, Habitat’s chief executive officer, in the news release. “That’s why sponsorships are only $700.”

“At just $700, families, businesses, groups of friends and neighbors can be a part of this historic build. There’s only one chance to build the 100th home and we want everyone to have the opportunity to join in the excitement,” added Deanna Harrison, director of development.

Habitat helps families obtain a new home by providing special financing and a sweat-equity program where the homeowner agrees to perform some of the work. Much of the labor is done by volunteers.

Habitat announced that in order to hit the 100-hour deadline, it is collaborating with Garrett & Associates General Contractors.

“Everyone at Garrett & Associates agrees that life is more than just about ourselves,” Marcia Garrett, the company’s director of business development, said in the announcement released by Habitat. “We want to use our talents and gifts to build up, to encourage, to strengthen and to share hope. What better way to do that than to partner with Habitat for Humanity?”

Subcontractors who would like to participate in the project can contact Randy Garrett at Garrett & Associates, 903-839-7909.
