BACKGROUND: Gum Creek is a locally owned and operated company in Ben Wheeler that mills its own wood working with land owners to salvage dead or dying trees or harvesting lumber for forest improvement. Once harvested, they mill and dry the wood. They have a solar kiln and two dehumidification kilns. After the wood is dried, they process it in their shop and determine its best use, depending on species, cut and quality. Most of the wood is used for multispecies flooring but also is used for cabinets, furniture, beams and other large sale products. The leftover scraps are used for cutting boards and home furnishings.
