PRODUCTS: Hood Packaging Corp. has designed and manufactured a wide range of packaging materials. Hood Packaging offers a variety of high-performance flexible plastic bags for consumer and industrial packaging. The bags are used for all sorts of products, including dog food, French fries, roofing shingles and medical equipment.
The company has plants throughout the U.S. and Canada. There are nine plants capable of manufacturing a wide range of plastic packaging products, including one in Tyler, and eight plants able to meet paper bag packaging needs. Hood’s coating operation provides coated paper products nationwide.
BACKGROUND: Hood Packaging began in 1978 as Southern Bag Corp. Ltd. in Yazoo City, Miss. In 1991, it acquired two paper packaging facilities in Pine Bluff, Ark. and Hamlet, N.C. Throughout the years, the company acquired several other businesses, including paper plants in Georgia, as well as Pittsburg, Kan., and Wilmington, Ohio. It acquired flexible plastic packaging facilities in Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota and Georgia. In 1995, Southern Bag opened a state-of-the-art graphics prepress and printing center in Alabama. In 1998, it acquired a paper packaging facility in South Carolina. In 2000, its parent company acquired six plastic and paper packaging plants in Canada and one in Tyler.
The company was renamed Hood Packaging Corp., which held the distinction of being the world’s third-largest supplier of multiwall paper packaging, one of the top 50 U.S. suppliers of consumer plastic packaging, and the leading North American producer of industrial plastic packaging. Since 2005, the company has continued to grow by acquiring a paper packaging facility in Arkansas; a fully-integrated plastic packaging converter with facilities in Montreal, Quebec and Cornwall, Ontario; and American Synthetics in South Carolina.
