GILMER -- The Upshur County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old white male who was found dead in his vehicle in the Diana community late Sunday night, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, died under suspicious circumstances, but not from suicide, said Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Lyle Potter, who ordered an autopsy. The Sheriff's Office issued a news release saying the "case is being investigated as a homicide."
The vehicle was parked beside Sego Lily Road in eastern Upshur County, said the judge, who said he did not know the circumstances under which the body was discovered. Potter said he pronounced the man dead at the scene at 3 a.m. today.
He said he would release more information on the incident this afternoon. The Tyler Paper learned that the body was found sometime before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Sheriff's Office said deputies "responded to a suspicious vehicle call" in the Diana area, and that upon arrival, "they found a male subject dead from a gun shot wound." The news release said the investigation was ongoing and that the office would issue an update "as more information becomes available."
Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said earlier today he had no information on the incident.
