A 31-year-old mother of three elementary-school-aged children was shot in the face and killed this morning by her brother-in-law in an apparent family dispute at her Kilgore home, according to the deceased woman's sister.

The man who fired the fatal shot was then fatally shot himself after he initiated a gunfight with Kilgore Police who were attempting to detain him. No police were injured, according to initial reports.

Kilgore police assistant chief Roman Roberson said at 10:16 a.m. today, Kilgore Police and the Gregg Gounty Sheriff's office received simultaneous 911 calls from a residence on Highway 31. Upon officers' arrival, they witnessed a man with a long rifle who shot at them. Then he went into the woods. Officers then discovered a female deceased in the home. The man then reappeared from the woods and shot at officers again. A gun battle ensued, and the gunman was shot and killed by officers.

Roberson said Texas Rangers are conducting the investigation since it was an officer-related shooting. Neither victim's name has yet been released.
