A man accused of breaking into a home in Smith County was shot in the rear by homeowners as he was running from the residence on US. Highway 271 north this morning.
At approximately 5 a.m. today, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a white male victim who had been shot near the 14000 block of Highway 271 North. Upon arrival of the responding patrol deputies, the white male was no longer at the location. Upon further investigation by the responding deputies, it was determined that the white male had been shot by a homeowner in the immediate area.
It was further determined that two black males and the white male allegedly went to the residence to burglarize it. The burglary attempt occurred at approximately 4 a.m.
The homeowners, a husband and wife, were awakened at approximately 4 a.m. due to their dogs barking. Upon further investigation by the male homeowner, he observed the individuals outside of his garage. He then woke his wife up, both retrieved firearms, and returned to near the garage where the individuals were located. A scuffle ensued once the male homeowner asked all of the individuals for their identification and told him he was calling the police.
The homeowner and the white male were wrestling and as the alleged burglar attempted to escape, both homeowners fired in his direction. The alleged burglar was struck in the buttocks area most likely with a large caliber handgun.
The alleged burglar was taken by private vehicle to a Tyler hospital, where he is being treated for the gunshot wound and is undergoing surgery. The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Smith County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene and detectives are continuing the investigation at this time and are attempting to locate the two black males who escaped the scene.
