Want a new movie to see this week? Pickings are slim.
“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones”
What’s it about? As one of the “marked ones,” a young man named Jesse is pursued by dark forces as his family and friends make a dangerous attempt to save him.
Will it be good? Probably not. I mean, judging by the rapidly declining quality of the previous three “Paranormal Activity” films, that is. The series hit its highest note with the first film based solely on the solid execution of its low budget gimmick (i.e. things get real quiet before something really loud and unexpected happens). But subsequent films have basically been nothing more than that one gag over and over again, while also drowning in the series’ overblown (and yet somehow still halfhearted) internal “mythology.” I think the change to a Hispanic neighborhood and apparent co-opting of similarly flavored religious iconography and such will actually do the series some good, but I still expect this to be a largely boring stinker with a whole bunch of jump scares and little else.
Rated R for pervasive language, some violence, graphic nudity and some drug use.
