At A Theater Near You - Survival film: Redford phenomenal in it

What’s new in theaters this weekend? Here’s a look!

“Out of the Furnace”

What’s it about? When Russell Blaze’s (Christian Bale) younger brother, Rodney (Casey Affleck) goes missing and with the police unable to help, Russell must take matters into his own hands.

Will it be good? This looks like a pretty searing tale of redemption and revenge. Directed by Scott Cooper (who also gave us “Crazy Heart”), this should turn out to be a very solid slow burn. If nothing else, the cast is phenomenal with Forest Whitaker, Sam Shepard, Woody Harrelson and Willem Dafoe joining Bale and Affleck (who is one of modern cinema’s most underrated and underused talents).

Rated R for strong violence, language and drug content.

“All Is Lost”

What’s it about? When his boat strikes a sunken shipping container, a resourceful sailor (Robert Redford) must find a way to survive despite odds that are increasingly against him.

Will it be good? Word out of the film festival circuit is that Redford is phenomenal in this. He’s the only character in the entire film so everything rests on his shoulders, though you can hardly ask for a more capable actor than Redford to carry out such a herculean effort. Redford is one of our all-time greats and I’m happy to see the man still taking risks at a point in his career when most others in his position are more apt to coast.

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.
